February 18 to 28 2017 ~ Karnival Days
Each year, just before the beginning of Lent, Bonaire celebrates Karnival. Everyone on Bonaire is treated to quite a show when the Children’s Karnival Parade dances its way through Kralendijk. The Grand Karnival Parade will be held on a Saturday in Rincon and on Sunday in Kralendijk.

January ~ Maskarada Returns to Bonaire
The island is bustling with visitors these holiday weeks, and those who made the trek to spend New Year’s on Bonaire are in for a treat, as January 1st hearkens the return of the Maskarada (Masqueraders).

November ~ Sanikolas

On Saturday November 26 Sint Nicholaas (Sanikolas) and his assistants, the Black Piets (Swarte Pieten), arrive on Bonaire aboard "The Good Return" charter boat. Once docked, the Piets explode onto the docks with energetic moves, dances, and long full-body waves, performed to the beat of a drum corps. After a fine performance, Old St. Nick makes his way down the dock to meet with everyone gathered.

December ~ Kingdom Day

Kingdom Day is the commemoration of the signing of the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands on December 15 1954. The Koninkrijks concert (English: Kingdom Concert) is held annually on December 15, to celebrate the relationship between Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles,Aruba and the BSE islands (Bonaire, Saba and Sint Eustatius)

October ~ Duo Xtreme Mountain Bike Competition
The 7th annual Duo Xtreme Mountain Bike Race on October 23 will attract cyclists from many areas. They all gather together in the predawn hours readying themselves for the upcoming starting gun.

October ~ Swim to Klein Bonaire
Take Part in the 16th Annual "Swim to Klein Bonaire" For the 16th time, Bonaire's youth development center, Jong Bonaire, is hosting its annual fundraising event, Swim to Klein Bonaire, on Sunday, October 9th, 2016. As usual, this fun and well attended events kicks off the festivities of the Bonaire Sailing Regatta.

September ~ Free Diving
Bonaire will once again host the 2016 Deepsea Challenge Free Diving event for nine days of world-class competitive free diving activities from September 2 through 10, 2016. Bonaire's own Carlos Coste, and Marina Kazankova, from Russia, will attempt the Longest Horizontal Free Dive in an ocean environment.

Rincon Homemade Ice Cream
Many long-time visitors will remember the days of stopping at Prisca's ice Cream in Rincon. Their home-made ice creams, reflecting the flavors of the tropics, were cooling and refreshing after a day in the sun. Now the family has just re-opened the ice cream shop, under the new name of "Homemade Rincon Ice Cream." Located at Kaya KomKomber #9 in Rincon, visitors can once again stop by seven days a week, from 12 noon until 8 pm (9 pm on weekends).

July 29 to 31 Prokids Windsurfing 2016
At Sorobon Beach, the 12th edition of Prokids Windsurfing will be from July 29th to 31st. These three days revolve around windsurfing competitions for both professional and amateur children.

June 16 to 19 ~ Sorobon Masters
Sorobon Masters was started in 2014 as an event to give amateur windsurfers of all ages the opportunity to compete with professionals and now has become a major windsurf event. . Both professionals and amateurs of all ages are welcome to compete in their own category.

June 18 - 26 Shark Week
Save Our Sharks project organizes the second Dutch Caribbean Shark Week, simultaneously on five Caribbean islands and in the Netherlands.

June 10 to 14 ~ Defi Wind Competition
The world famous wind & kite event “Defi Wind” is starting a brand new Defi Wind contest in the Caribbean. Founded in 2001 and now the biggest gathering of competing windsurfers ever! World known for the spectacular start of the race, where over 1300 surfers and kiters start at the same time, on the same line.

April 27 to 30 ~ Rincon Days
All the people of Bonaire have a day off work and schools are closed on April 30. Everyone goes to Rincon; it is the only day in the year that people without licenses to trade can sell things on the street. Some people set up stalls to sell second-hand goods. Others set up stalls to sell traditional food and drink. There is a lot of busking and official musical performances on King's Day, April 27.

March 28
Easter Monday is the Simadan (Harvest) Festival Rincon. Simadan stems from Bonaire's slave days and celebrates the growing season's harvest (typically March/April).

March 19 to 20 Kitemanera
It’s an annual springtime tradition on Bonaire, the Kontest di Fli (Kite Flying Contest). Bonaire hosts this annual event for all the enthusiasts visiting the island to improve their skills. Events start at 10:30 am on Kite Beach a/k/a Atlantis.

November 21 ~ Sanikolas Arrives
Saturday the 21st Sint Nicholaas (Sanikolas) and his assistants, the Black Piets (Swarte Pieten), will arrive in Bonaire aboard The Good Return charter boat. The Swarte Pieten will cavort through the crowd, dancing, swinging their sacks and ropes, teasing the children and throwing candies. Sint Nicholaas history lies in Dutch folklore and tradition, originating more than 600 years ago when the Bishop of Madrid, Spain, gave gifts to everyone on his birthday, December 6. This bishop, it is said, originally came from Turkey with his helpers who were black (Swarte). At that time Holland was ruled by Spain, so when Sint Nicholaas comes he arrives from Spain by boat.

Duo Xtreme Bonaire Mountain Bike Race October 18 2015
It's a fun event to watch, or if you have a partner and a bike, anyone can join the fun. There are two routes, a "pro" route of 51 kilometers and an "xtreme" route of 76 kilometers.

Sunday November 15 2015
Heart Foundation triathlon at Plaza Resort begins at 3 pm. Events include 500 meter swim, 20 kilometer cycle, ending with a 5 kilometer plus run. Both individual athletes and teams can participate in this triathlon.

Regatta October 7 - 10 2015
For almost 50 years, Bonaire has continued to celebrate its sailing tradition by hosting the International Sailing Regatta, held each year in October. There are parties, races and dancing, as well as music, food, and drink. The entire island takes on a festive atmosphere and visitors from all over the world are welcome to participate as crew or spectators.

The 5th Annual Jong Bonaire Swim to Klein Bonaire Is October 4. This year's is very special as there are actually two swims during the event!

Monument Day September 27 2015
In connection with Bonaire's annual Monument Day, this Sunday, September 27, 2015, the island government and the Bonaire Monuments Foundation will jointly organize an event.

Cadushy Bonaire International Dance Festival is September 10-13 2015
Those who love a good Latin beat always enjoy the annual dance festival held on Bonaire, where one can learn or practice some great salsa, bachata, or kizomba. This year the event will be held from September 10 through 13, 2015.

Perseid Meteor Shower
The 2015 Perseid meteor shower will peak on August 11, 12 and 13. A new moon on August 14, 2015 will create perfect conditions for watching the meteor shower. It's looking good that we will see quite a show with Bonaire's current clear conditions.

Windsurfing July 3 to 5 2015
The 11th Annual Prokids Bonaire Freestyle & Slalom Championship is set for July 3-5. This year the event is dedicated to a very talented windsurfer with a remarkable 20 years’ experience in the sport. The talented Bjorn Saragoza has been windsurfing since he was three years old, with his first appearance in Baby Class in the Bonaire Sailing Regatta in 1997. From then on he won lots of prizes and is currently in the top 10 Overall Ranking of the PWA WORLD TOUR at 7th place (2014).

Washington Park Open House June 7th 2015
It’s an annual tradition for STINAPA to hold an annual open house at Washington-Slagbaai National Park. Admission to the park on this day is free, and there are plenty of activities to keep one occupied from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Sorobon Masters 2015
The Mens and Womens Slalom and Freestyle Windsurfing "Sorobon Masters" takes place May 22 to 25 2015, Sorobon Beach. Join all the people who help the young and talented windsurfers to grow and follow their passion!

April 30 2015 - King & Queen will Visit
His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Maxima will, on invitation of the Island Governor of Bonaire, Edison Rijna, attend Rincon Day (Dia di Rincon) on Thursday April 30th.

37th Annual Kite Flying Contest
It’s an annual springtime tradition on Bonaire, and 2015 will mark the 37th annual event of the Kontest di Fli (Kite Flying Contest). This fun event will take place Sunday, March 29th, 2015. The competition will begin at 8:00 AM in the field behind Kooyman’s and it will run throughout the day. It’s a fun event for the entire family with snacks, drinks, and music available for purchase. Enjoy!

Sunday March 8th
The Special Olympics Annual Walk-A-Thon begins at 5:00 AM at the slave huts in the south, and will end at FKPD in Rincon. The distance for walking is 30 kilometers, and for cycling, it is 40 kilometers. Spend Sunday morning enjoying a cool walk and Bonaire’s sunrise, and also help out a good cause!

February is Karnival Time on Bonaire
Each year, just before the beginning of Lent, Bonaire celebrates Karnival. Everyone on Bonaire is treated to quite a show when the Children’s Karnival Parade Feb 7 & 8 dances its way through Kralendijk. The teenagers parade is on Feb 12 & 13 with the Grand Karnival Parade on Saturday Feb 14 in Rincon and on Sunday Feb 15 in Kralendijk.

STINAPA invites everyone to another great sunrise hike up the Brandaris, Bonaire’s highest point, on Sunday morning, January 25th, 2015.

Fishing Tournament January 22-24
2015 will mark the 27th year that Bonaire has hosted the International & Local Fishing Tournament. It boasts over $15,000 in prizes, besides being a lot of fun! The “International” portion of the tournament will be a Bill-Fish catch and release tournament, while the local competition will for fish for consumption. Saturday afternoon there will be lots of activities by the water near the pier of Club Nautico.

STINAPA Bonaire is launching a lionfish derby and degustation. Sunday afternoon the Bonaire Culinary Team present their signature Lion Fish Ceviche dish in an awareness-building event at Sunset Beach. Open to the public.

Aug 15 - DFB Launches New Boat

August - Heineken Jazz Festival
Tenth edition of Bonaire's Jazz Festival will take place from August 1st through 3rd, 2014. With an attendance of over 2000 persons in 2013, 2014 promises to be an event not to be missed.

June - Windsurfing World Cup
Freestyle Windsurfing Championship on Bonaire June 20 - 24. The Professional Windsurfers Association, PWA Freestyle Event will be held on the beach of Sorobon at Lac Cai.

June - Cadushy Int'l Dance Festival
June 5 - 8, learn those Latin rhythms that make the feet tap and the shoulders move, as the festival will feature workshops covering Bachata, Rueda, Kizomba, and, of course, everyone’s favorite, Salsa. There will be a special Kizomba Boot Camp by Taiti and Christel, and festival parties and performances throughout the four-day event.

Clean Up Dive Saturday April 19th
Dive Friends are hosting another quarterly Clean Up Dive on Saturday at South Pier. Check in for volunteers will begin at 9:45am at the Dive Inn location, with a briefing for everyone at 10am. Don't forget Cert cards, ELF's if your a lion fish hunter and your knife/shears for cutting fish line. Non-divers are also needed to help with a beach clean-up and to log items removed from the water for PADI Project Aware. At 6pm Dive Friends will be hosting a potluck BBQ at the Hamlet Oasis location, so bring along a snack, side-dish or dessert to share. Dive Friends will provide the main course and one beverage.

12th Annual Walk-A-Thon March 9th
The Special Olympics Bonaire will once again host their 12th Annual Walk-A-Thon. The start will be the White Slave Huts at 5:00 am and the finish will be at Pasa Dia Karino in Rincon. You can walk, run or cycle either part of all the planned route.

2014 Scuba Diving Magazine Awards
Bonaire has once again received top honors and secured seven different awards in Scuba Diving Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards, including three #1 ratings, underlining the island’s long held reputation as a diver’s paradise. For the 21st consecutive year, Bonaire has taken first place for the #1 Shore Diving Destination.

The #1 Caribbean/Atlantic region rankings received by Bonaire include Best Macro Diving, Best Shore Diving, and Best Beginner Diving. The #2 rankings include Best Overall Destination and Best Marine Environment. Bonaire is also ranked #3 for Best Overall Diving and #4 for Best Visibility.

Lora Count Increase
Bonaire's annual Lora counts shows the population is not only stable, but on the increase. During the annual count (parrot count) on Saturday January 25 2014, it was discovered that their were 847, while last year 865 lora were counted.

King Willem Alexander Nov 16 2013
On November 16 our new King Willem Alexander and his wife Maxima will visit Bonaire. A new dive site will bear his name during the celebration.

Debris Free Bonaire Oct 2013
When Dive Friends Bonaire started Debris Free Bonaire in December 2012, they had no idea what a success it was going to be. As of October 27th, 2013, Debris Free Bonaire volunteers have collectively removed over 100 cubic meters (3,531 cubic feet) of marine plastic debris and it continues to pour in. Since its inception, tourists and locals have enthusiastically embraced Debris Free Bonaire. The program was designed to provide volunteers, both visitors to Bonaire as well as island residents, the opportunity to assist with costal cleanups on their own time. The project's success has proven to be far beyond anyone's expectations.

Bonaire hosts its first Kite Week for all the enthusiasts visiting the island to improve their skills; training next to the locals who get to train every day.

Windsurfing Competition May 31 - June 2 2013
ProKids Freestyle and Slalom Windsurfing Competition is taking place at Bonaire's famed windsurfing location, Sorobon at Lac Bay, the event will attract the sport's youth from both Bonaire and around the world.

Top Dive Destination for 2013
Bonaire has once again swept top honors receiving seventeen different awards in Scuba Diving Magazine's Readers' Choice Awards, more than any other destination in the region, including five #1 ratings, proving the island's dominance as the premiere dive destination in the Caribbean and around the world. For the twentieth consecutive year, Bonaire has taken first place for the #1 Shore Diving Destination.

Fishing Tournament January 17-25 2013
2013 will mark the 25th year that Bonaire has hosted the International & Local Fishing Tournament. It boasts over $15,000 in prizes, besides being a lot of fun! On Saturday, January 19th, there will be a Ship-to-Shore Boat Party for those who want to party or just relax after a great day of fishing.

Sinterklaas Birthday - December
Originated in Holland and celebrated only in the Dutch Caribbean and the Netherlands, Sinterklaas (or St. Nicholas) is a day children look forward to. Sinterklaas is a tall elderly man dressed in red who rides a white horse and is accompanied by zwarte pieten (servants). As tradition has it, Sinterklaas visits only once a year, bringing presents to all the children who have been well behaved. In order to receive a present, children on the night before fill one of their shoes with grass for Sinterklaas' white horse; the next morning they awake to find an empty shoe and a present.

Sanikolas Arrives on Bonaire This Saturday, November 24th, 2012. Each year, Sanikolas, also called St. Nicholas (English), or Sinterklaas (Dutch), arrives on Bonaire amid much fanfare. The old gentleman, along with his Zwartepietnan (Black Piets), will visit with the children (of all ages) on Bonaire over the coming weeks.

Just over a year ago, two health and wellness entities on Bonaire--Bon Bida Spa and Gym and Bon Fysiotherapie merged together as one. Hiking in Washington Slagbaai National Park Feb 2012

For all those visitors who think they have "done it all on Bonaire," there's always something new to explore and learn about the island. Hiking the three trails in Washington Slagbaai National Park is something that can be added to the Bonaire bucket list.

Kriabon's Marshe di Kunukeru

Kriabon is the agricultural cooperative for Bonaire, and each first Saturday of the month, they organize a Marshe di Kukukeru, or Farmers' Market, at their headquarters at Kaminda Jatu Baco #55.

Sea Turtle Tracking Update

On December 11, 2011, satellite signals indicated that Jklynn had started her migration home in a northerly direction and by December 22nd, the female Hawksbill was just 80 kilometers south of the Dominican Republic, swimming 716 kilometers or 445 miles to get there.
January 15 she was in the coastal waters of one of the Dominican Republic’s most beautiful beaches and is an area where some Hawksbill and many Leatherback turtles nest. Looking at her average rate of speed, she traveled from Bonaire to that area in approximately 13 days.

Dive Friends Bonaire

On Saturday, January 21st we are hosting one of our famous quarterly Clean Up Dives! Check in begins at 9:30am at Yellow Submarine and then we will head over to Karel’s Beach Bar for the clean up dive at 10am. The underwater environment around the pier needs a lot of attention and we know there will be a lot of beer bottles to clean up, so please get the word out. All are welcome! To thank all of our volunteers, a potluck BBQ starts at 6pm with a raffle including some great prizes from our sponsors. We’ll supply the meat and the first two drinks but please bring a snack, side-dish or dessert to share. After the BBQ, the Good Return is offering a cruise for $5.

Many visitors to Bonaire "catch the bug"--that undefined magic that ensnares nearly all visitors to the island, and it is the reason that most of Bonaire's tourists return time and time again. And now, travel blog Global Grasshopper has named Bonaire in the top ten list of most tropical and beautiful island escapes from around the world.

Coral Spawning
In the days following the full moons in August, September, and October, many marine organisms spawn, including both hard and soft corals, as well as invertebrates. Spawning is always tied to the full moon, usually occurring three to nine days after the full moon in each of these two months.

2011 Top Honors

Diving Just Got Better
Continental has launched a twice a week nonstop service from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Curacao (CUR). The new service departs on Wednesdays and Saturdays and gives people the option of a ten day trip, making Bonaire more accessible for the best shore diving in the world.

Cruise/Dive Boat December 1, 2010
The Good Return, a 50 foot Scalloper that holds up to 60 passengers is now offering cruises around the water of Bonaire. Trips include a BBQ and Snorkel cruise, a Klein Bonaire cruise, a Lazy Sunday cruise, weddings, private parties, dive trips and other custom trips. The boat features a galley, shower, large main deck and a dance floor. It’s a great way to spend a day swimming, snorkeling, barbecuing or just relaxing.

It's Official--Bonaire is Now Part of The Netherlands

At the stroke of midnight October 9th, all those on Bonaire said farewell to the Netherlands Antilles, and then welcomed Holland, as Bonaire, along with its sister islands, St. Eustatius and Saba, are now part of Holland as a special municipality and the three islands are to be officially called the Dutch Caribbean.

Bonaire International Airport (BIA, also commonly known as Flamingo Airport) has finalized the process with IATA to incorporate the Passenger Facility Charge (PFC), better known as the airport departure tax, into the costs of the airline travel ticket and to have it collected by IATA on the island's behalf. The effective date for this change is October 1, 2010.
